Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Director of the D.I. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education addressed the participants and guests of the RAREMET-2026 International Congress. Alexander Mazhuga stressed the strategic importance of the upcoming forum for the development of Russian science and industry:
"Today, the development of the domestic industry of rare and rare earth metals (REM) is of key importance in ensuring the technological leadership and economic independence of the Russian Federation.
An action plan for the development of the industry has been approved as part of the national technological leadership project "New Materials and Chemistry" (NPTL). By 2030, it is planned to reduce the import of REM to 45% and increase production to 50 thousand tons per year.
The reserves of REM in our country are estimated to be about 28.7 million tons, which is the second largest indicator in the world. At the same time, today we produce less than 1% of this volume. The implementation of the NPTL requires effective cooperation between the government, business, science and education, the search and implementation of new solutions for the development of mining and processing of rare and rare earth metals. An equally important task is to train personnel with the necessary set of competencies: mining engineers, metallurgists, chemical technologists and other specialists. The D.I. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology today implements modern training programs for highly qualified specialists who are in high demand by the industry, and also has scientific and technological groundwork in terms of developing new technologies.
In 2026, the D.I. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology became a partner of the RAREMET 2026 International Congress, organized by the Giredmet State Research and Design Institute of the Rare Metal Industry. The Congress will become the largest platform for a productive dialogue between government and business, fundamental and applied science, as well as the university community on the most pressing issues of the rare earth industry. The congress will also be attended by leading experts from friendly foreign countries such as India and China, and many others.
I invite you to Moscow from May 20 to 22 to discuss current challenges together, present your developments and find partners for joint projects. I’ll be waiting for you at the RAREMET 2026 Congress.
